The Energy Guardian® Hatch Kits come in 3 different models that fit over virtually any push up hatch. Each kit has an R-30 insulating value, revolutionary air seal and 20 year warranty.

Each kit is comprised of a lid and frame. The revolutionary air seal is formed when the lid fits into the frame. The lid weighs approximately 5 lb. and the frame is less than 3 lb. Depending on the location of the existing hatch in the attic and the height of the attic insulation, you have the option of a 2 in or 10 in high frame.

Sometimes the builder puts in a wooden frame in the attic above the hatch opening. In many cases, there is no framing between the floor joists in the attic over the hatch. If that is the case in your home, then ESS offers Joists Framing Units. These components fit between the floor joists and slide down to the dry wall. This is very important in creating an air tight seal.

As an additional option, the lid comes with either a handle or hatch connector. With a handle, the drywall or plywood hatch cover is halved for easy access. If that is not desirable, then you can choose a hatch connector. The hatch connector is a component that connects the top of the drywall or plywood hatch to the bottom of The Energy Guardian® lid.

You need to make a few measurements and note some things to make certain that you order the proper kit for your home.

Hatch Between Support Trusses

These are most common in new construction. The support trusses are 2x4 boards that extend from the floor joists to the ceiling throughout the attic. They are also typically located on each long side of the opening for the ladder, leaving a narrow entryway.

For a Trussed Attic, take the following measurements:

A) Length and width of opening in attic

B) Clearance above hatch opening

C) Height of insulation above the top of the floor joists

If A) is equal to or less than 22½ x 31 inches, either B) is less than 15 inches or C) is less than 2 inches, then you need a truss hatch kit with 2 inch frame

If A) is equal to or less than 22½ x 31 inches, B) greater than 15 inches, and C) is greater than 2 inches, then you need a truss hatch kit with 10 inch frame

Hatch In an Open Attic Area

For a Hatch in an attic without trusses, take the following measurements:

A) Length and width of opening in attic

B) Clearance above hatch opening

C) Height of insulation above the top of the floor joists

If A) is equal to or less than 26 x 31 inches, either B) is less than 15 inches or C) is less than 2 inches, then you need a standard hatch kit with 2 inch frame. Choose either a handle or hatch connector.
